I appreciate you providing the information you shared about the awful climate change impact of the rains in the northeast. What was jarring but not surprising was how you opened your mouth and said Hurricane Katrina was like a gentle breeze in comparison. Over 1800 people lost their lives. The world got to witness how little regards our government had and has for our beautiful southern states, it’s people (especially the areas most impacted which were heavily Black areas) and rebuilding our damaged areas. Many of those areas have still not been repaired, many of the people were never able to return home, many were denied government assistance, and sadly many are still living in the mobile homes that were set up for short term use. However, as I said in the beginning, I was not surprised. Sadly, southern states with a large population of people of color have historically been less important than places like New York and New Jersey. I am not saying what happened there is less important because it is very important! It is one of many hard truth about denying climate change and climate environmental impact existence! But Hurricane Katrina was not “a gentle breeze “ from which the south was made to be a global example among many examples of how the United States always answers the call of its people. Because in our case, as in the case of Puerto Rico – they did not. It was the families, the nonprofit organizations, and the global community that answered our cries! Shame on you for once again bringing me back to such a moment of hurt, disappointment, and shame. And to inflict the pain again by saying the south was and is less important than the shiny areas up north. We have to be accountable for the words that come out of our mouths because intent and impact have devastating consequences.
